Most aquarists admire the depth of Back to Nature backgrounds. To achieve a similar effect on a budget, you can create your own using polystyrene sheets, PU foam, and cement-based paint.
Process and Materials
To start, you need a polystyrene sheet (EPS) cut to size, a can of PU foam, aquarium-safe silicone, and cement paint (such as Alfix).
- Creating Texture: Apply the PU foam to the sheet in irregular patterns. Keep in mind that the foam expands significantly. Once cured, you can carve it with a utility knife to create realistic rock textures.
- Sealing and Painting: Apply multiple layers of cement paint. This provides the grey rock color and a durable shell that protects against algae-eating fish like Mbuna Cichlids.
- Curing and Leaching: Cement-based products will increase pH and hardness. The background must be soaked for several weeks with frequent water changes before housing sensitive species like Julidochromis ornatus.
Installation
Use generous amounts of aquarium silicone to secure the background to the rear glass. Since both polystyrene and PU foam are highly buoyant, ensure the silicone is fully cured (24-48 hours) before filling the tank.
