Frozen daphnia, commonly known as water fleas, are a staple in the aquarium hobby. While they might not provide the same high protein levels as Artemia or Cyclops, they offer unique benefits that make them essential for a well-rounded diet.

Digestion and Roughage

The primary advantage of daphnia is their high chitin content from their exoskeletons. This acts as crucial dietary fiber for fish, helping to clear the digestive tract and prevent bloating or constipation. Many experienced aquarists refer to daphnia as "roughage." If your fish have been consuming heavy, high-protein dry foods, a meal of daphnia can be very beneficial for their gut health.

Feeding in the Aquarium

Most fish readily accept frozen daphnia. Their small size makes them suitable for a wide range of species, from tiny tetras to larger cichlids. I personally use them as a dietary supplement a few times a week rather than a primary food source. As with all frozen foods, I recommend thawing them in a sieve and rinsing them briefly under cold water before feeding.

Live vs. Frozen

While you can catch live daphnia in local ponds during spring and summer to provide enrichment, there is always a risk of introducing pests or parasites. Frozen daphnia provide the same fiber and nutritional benefits without the biosecurity risks. If you find a good deal, they are an excellent addition to any fishkeeper's freezer.
