Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Brown' is an immensely popular and rewarding aquatic plant, known for its incredible hardiness and adaptability. It thrives in both soft and hard water and does not require intense lighting, making it ideal for beginners and advanced aquarists alike.
Growth and Appearance
This variety is recognized by its beautiful dark brown to olive-green leaves, which often develop a slightly hammered texture. While it doesn't grow very fast, its growth rate is remarkably stable. Over time, it forms a dense rosette that serves as a perfect transition between the foreground and background of the tank.
Propagation and Maintenance
When established, the plant sends out small runners from the rhizome, which can be separated to create individual new plants. However, in my experience, the best visual result is achieved by letting the plant grow large and bushy before considering dividing the runners.
Be aware of 'Cryptocoryne melt,' where the plant may shed all its leaves due to sudden changes in water parameters or lighting. If this happens, don't give up; leave the rhizome in the substrate, and it will almost always sprout new, healthy leaves after a short period.
Aquarist's Tip
The C. wendtii types are well-suited for cichlid tanks. As the leaves are relatively bitter and tough, most fish tend to leave them alone, making them a safe choice for tanks with Central American cichlids or smaller species from Lake Malawi.
